Location: Light for the darknessParadoxical but true: for your Ficus to keep its intense, dark colour, it needs plenty of bright, indirect light. If it's kept too dark, the leaves can turn green. A spot at a bright north-facing window or a few metres away from a south- or west-facing window is perfect. Avoid direct midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering: The art of letting it dry outThe Ficus elastica doesn't like wet feet. At all! Let the top 3–5 cm of soil dry out well between waterings. The finger test is your best friend here. When in doubt, it's always better to be slightly too dry than too wet. Waterlogging is the biggest enemy and quickly leads to root rot.
Humidity & Care: Duster rather than mistingIt does fine with normal indoor air. Far more important than misting is regularly dusting the large leaves with a soft, damp cloth. That way the leaves can breathe better, take up light, and show off their dark splendour.
Nutrients & a small noteIn spring and summer during the growth phase, it will appreciate a dose of houseplant fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. In autumn and winter it rests and needs no nutrients.
